Screen printing on fabric and paper

Participants shall create a design for screen-printing with the stencil cut method in mind. We will also have access to studio designs already on screens. We will be printing onto recycled tote bags, recycled seed card and waste fabrics from the fashion industry using water based inks. Participants are welcome to bring in their own items to breath new life into (natural materials only please). Participants will get to take home several handprinted fabrics, papers and products. There will also be a group collaboration component to connect members of the community that may not otherwise meet. This shall include the meditative process of hand sewing a swatch of each participant’s design to form a patchwork piece with stunning results!! Light refreshments included. Opportunity to join the studio to continue printing and stay connected to the Monster Mice community. Suitable for ages 12yrs and up. Great school holiday workshop idea!!

Kintsugi – the golden joinery of creative restoration

Kintsugi is a century-old Japanese craftwork where broken ceramic objects are pieced back together using lacquer and gold based on the philosophy  of Wabe Sabi finding beauty in imperfection.

The process transforms much loved, worn items into a beautifully crafted, new piece of art. It is a chance to live more sustainably and to rescue objects which would otherwise be discarded.

In the recent years the Kintsugi craftsmanship has been influencing on Modern art around the world.

In this workshop, you will learn introductory technique of “Modern Kintsugi”, putting provided two broken parts together. The process follows the same principal using more accessible alternative materials which enables us to complete the whole process within the class.

Kids Japanese mosaic tile art

Children will choose the recycled mosaic tiles of different colours and shapes with their imagination, puzzle them together to create beautiful one of a kind coasters / plates to take home.

All tiles and mosaics are salvaged from renowned ceramic region of Tajimi Japan. We will talk about Japanese philosophy of “mottainai” which means “don’t waste”, to lean sustainable living.

The process involves from choosing tiles, gluing them onto the prepared surface, grouting and finishing of the tile surfaces.

Please note that we will be using synthetic glue and cement based grout.

Conquer your fear of painting

Down with perfectionism! In this workshop, we’ll run through several activities that will help you break out of the need to create a photo realistic image. We’ll look at different painting techniques, and focus on the hands on interaction with the materials. Learn to be in the moment and enjoy the movement and process of painting. We’ll start with a couple of quick practice pieces that focus on different techniques before moving on to a final work using acrylic paint.

Spinning yarn with a drop-spindle

In this session you will gain the tools and ability to start your own spinning practice. We will examine the practice of spinning, techniques on how to use a drop-spindle and and how the process of working with natural renewable fibres.

Class price includes the fibres to spin on the day. Feel free to bring your own spindle or use one provided.

Dye your own scarf

Get colourful and experiment with multi-coloured dyeing techniques and walk away with a scarf plus a collection of smaller experiments of your own creation.

Through guided demonstrations, discover different techniques for multi-coloured fabric dyeing without using excessive amounts of water or dye. Over three hours we will layer, crumple, spiral, fold, bind and clamp fabric pieces to create various, and always colourful, uniquely patterned dyed creations.

All dyestuffs required for the day will be provided along with a scarf of your choice and a selection of fabric pieces for experimentation. Participants are also encouraged to bring along their own fabric (white or very pale colour and natural fibre) It is also recommended to bring along some plastic bags to transport wet, dyed fabric home in. Disposable gloves will be provided, aprons are not, so bring one along if you can. Clothes you don’t mind getting dyed and closed in, non-slip shoes are recommended.

Sakiori - sustainable Japanese hand-weaving

Unique experience of learning hand-weaving by an artisan weaver from Japan.

In this beginner-intermediate hand-weaving workshop we will create one place-mat size Christmas wall art with recycled vintage Japanese Kimono fabric, cotton/wool/lien/paper yarn using lap loom we provide, learning from how to warp the loom to making the patterns.

“Sakiori” is a Japanese weaving style from Edo period. Old Kimono fabrics are torn in strips to use as weft to re-recreate a new product. All the materials and equipment are provided.

Kids Felt Loofah Soaps

In this session, come and create a felted loofah around a soap. No more slippery soaps!  Come have fun for the day, gaining an introduction to felt-making, and leave with a pressie for someone special (or keep it for yourself!)
