Kintsugi – the golden joinery of creative restoration

Kintsugi is a century-old Japanese craftwork where broken ceramic objects are pieced back together using lacquer and gold based on the philosophy  of Wabi Sabi finding beauty in imperfection.

Screen Printing with Stencils

As part of Craft week 2018 participants shall create a design for screen-printing with the stencil cut method in mind. We will experiment on a variety of fabrics and papers and also combine our designs with pre-made patterned screens to create a unique work. We will be printing onto recycled tote bags, recycled seed card and waste fabrics from the fashion industry using water based inks.

Mindful painting

Do you have an object that you just can’t part with? During this creative event, we will be considering the connection we have to different objects in our lives. Please come with one or two objects, that have personal significance to you. Together we will explore the connections we have to these items, and spend time in the experience of mindful painting, creating our own personal still life works.

Spinning yarn with a drop-spindle

In this session you will gain the tools and ability to start your own spinning practice. We will examine the practice of spinning, techniques on how to use a drop-spindle and and how the process of working with natural renewable fibres.

Class price includes the fibres to spin on the day. Feel free to bring your own spindle or use one provided.

Kids Japanese mosaic tile art

Children will choose the recycled mosaic tiles of different colours and shapes with their imagination, puzzle them together to create beautiful one of a kind coasters / pot mat to take home. All tiles and mosaics are salvaged from renowned ceramic region of Tajimi Japan. We will talk about Japanese philosophy of “mottainai” which means “don’t waste”, to lean sustainable living.

Shibori Dyeing Workshop

Learn the ancient Japanese art of Shibori dyeing. Manipulate fabrics with tiles, clamps and an array of folding, stitching and tying techniques to achieve unique aesthetics. Be amazed as indigo vat dyed pieces oxidise before your eyes and turn from green to blue, as we apply a natural indigo dye.

Screen Printing Workshop

Learn how to screen-print your own designs (or a studio design) from exposing screens with photo emulsion and a light box to printing then stripping the screens. Screen printing allows you to replicate a visual design across surfaces (e.g. fabric). Plenty of room for experimentation.

Sakiori – Sustainable Japanese hand-weaving

Unique experience of learning hand-weaving by an artisan weaver from Japan. In this beginner-intermediate hand-weaving workshop we will create one place-mat size Christmas wall art with recycled vintage Japanese Kimono fabric, cotton/wool/lien/paper yarn using lap loom we provide, learning from how to warp the loom to making the patterns.
